FAQ

What does data recovery mean?

Data recovery is the process of salvaging data which was previously inaccessible by normal methods. File deletions, formats, corruptions, hard disk crash can all lead to the need for data recovery.

What causes data loss?

There are a variety of reasons (or combinations) which may lead to data loss. Among the most common causes that contribute to data loss are:

  • Virus attack
  • Logical file system corruption
  • Accidental file or partition deletion or disk reformat
  • Data corruption
  • Computer crime or sabotage
  • Hardware or electronic components failure
  • Read-write head crash
  • Physical trauma
  • Human error
  • Natural disasters such as flood or fire

How do I know my hard disk has actually failed?

Hard disk failure is characterised by one or a combination of symptoms which include:

  • Bios does not detect hard drive.
  • Hard disk detected but OS does not load/boot up.
  • Operating system does not boot up or boots up intermittently.
  • Hard disk is dead silent and shows no signs of operation.
  • Bios displays model of hard disk with nonsensical characters.
  • Files, folders or directories disappear mysteriously.
  • User accidentally deletes files/user error.
  • Clicking, scraping or knocking sound when computer/media device is switched on.
  • Data corruption.
  • Files and folders cannot be open.
  • And various other reasons.

Do I have to pay if ADRC fails to recover my critical data ?

We have a “no data no charge” policy. This simply means if you do not get the data you want, you don’t pay at all.

If important data is inadvertently deleted, can I continue using the computer (or any other data storage media)?

Do not use the PC or notebook and switch off the unit at once! In fact , all activity should be stopped immediately, otherwise you are running the risk of losing important data permanently.

Can I use chkdsk/scandisk when I am prompted by my computer to fix some irregularities in the system?

If you lose data, anything you do after that will be detrimental to any data recovery attempts later. So, just stop using your computer and send it in for recovery

There are so many so called data recovery service providers, how do I choose the right one?

Choosing the right data recovery service provider is essential, as what you are handing over to them is your very own data, which might be confidential and personal.

  • The company background.
  • Company experience and expertise.
  • Main business of the company (Hint: Data Recovery).
  • Any references/testimonials that the company can produce.
  • Data recovery success rate, and how success rate is calculated.
  • Data recovery standards/benchmarks that the company holds to.
  • Charges for unsuccessful recovery.
  • Hidden costs.
  • Recovery tools and facilities (e.g. Class 100 clean room)
  • How the recovered data is returned back to you.

What is your success rate?

We would, but in the grand scheme of things if you are the unlucky few who do not get their data recovered, it wouldn’t matter. You don’t get your data back, so what does the success rate matter?

However, what we can tell you is how likely you are to get your data back in various data loss situations.

A lot of such recovery rates are based on a certain disk model or category of recovery. You may want to know that recovery of 2.5" notebook drive has a far better chance than 3.5" desktop drive. Certain disk models are more favourable than the other due to some technological differences. In some disk models, nearly 100% recovery rate is possible. In others, it could be less than 10%.

In logical cases (deletion, format, etc), you have a high chance of recovery PROVIDED that you do not use the computer after. If you do, there is a possibility that the recovery is partial, if at all.

Hardware related recoveries however, are a different matter together. Success depends on the extent of damage, how extensive the damage is, what media that has suffered failure.

Can I still recover my important data from the hard disk which is infested with bad sectors?

Yes you can. Just stop using the media first.

What exactly is head crash or hard disk crash?

The inner workings of a hard disk are such that the read-write head FLOATS above the platters (where your data is stored) during operation at the amazing height of 0.5 microinches! Your hair in comparison is over 2,000 microinches.

When hard disk crash happens, the read-write head will literally crash on the platter and with it physical bits of the platter. Data is literally, physically scraped off.

Does data recovery software work as advertised?

It all depends on the nature of the data loss.

Hardware related failures are impossible to recover with data recovery software.

However, if the data loss is logical in nature, you can use data recovery software. Take care however, that you do not accidentally delete your data permanently.

What should I do if I decide to go for data recovery now?

Send in your hard disk for an evaluation first so that a firm quotation can be sent to you. You can decide then (if you decide to) proceed with data recovery.

Read here for more information.

How should I pack the damaged hard disk?

Take care of your hard disk like you would an egg. Both are fragile, and both require care and protection to carry around.

Below are guidelines on packing your damaged hard disk.

  • The media must be wrapped in anti-static packaging
  • Put the media, surrounded by bubble wrap, Styrofoam, or even newspapers, snugly fit in the package.
  • Remove all cables, brackets, manuals, and diskettes. Please note that if your media is a hard drive, we require you to send only your hard drive and not the full system
  • For RAID array data recovery – system controller card or full server systems may be required under some special circumstances. Please contact us for details.

What information should I submit for evaluation and subsequently, data recovery?

Your contact information for a star would be nice. Also, we need the circumstances of you data loss, in as much detail as possible.

e.g. Deletion of file and emptying the recycle bin.

What charges do I incurr if recovery is unsuccessful?

There is no evaluation fee but if the user opts to cancel the job after receiving our quotation, a cancelation fee will be imposed.
